The role of physical therapy on osteoarthritis. Study with unilateral knee osteoarthritis. Effectiveness of isometric exercises on pain perception and functional mobility among old age people with osteoarthritis who are residing in old age homes at Mangalore. A study to assess the self help techniques of osteoarthritis among elderly in selected old age homes, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. A study to assess the effectiveness of stretching exercises on pain, stiffness and performance of activity of old age people with knee osteoarthritis in selected old age home, Chennai. Aging and inflammation in two epidemiological worlds. Gurven M, Kaplan H, Winking J, Finch C, Crimmins EM. Hence, it was concluded that isometric exercise is an effective intervention in improving functional ability among elderly with osteoarthritis. The calculated t- value 2.24 was greater than the table value at 0.05 level of significance. It was identified that the mean level of functional ability before and after isometric exercises were 38.01 and 34.9, respectively, with a mean difference of 3.11. Post-test was done to assess the knee pain, stiffness and physical function among elderly with osteoarthritis by using WOMAC index scale. Isometric exercise combined with WB-EMS significantly enhanced the strength of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles and reduced the levels of various inflammatory cytokines including IL-6, TNF-, CRP, and RSTN. Isometric exercises were administered followed by aerobic exercises, twice daily for 30 minutes for 30 days. Interestingly, when combined with WB-EMS, the beneficial effects of isometric exercise on early knee OA notably increased. Aerobic exercises were given to elderly for 10 minutes. Pre-test was done to assess the knee pain, stiffness and physical function by using WOMAC index scale. The demographic profiles were collected from the elderly. Isometric exercises are effective in reducing knee pain and improving functional ability among elderly with osteoarthritis. Twenty-two elderly were selected by using purposive sampling technique. Quasi-experimental one-group pre-test–post test design was adopted in this study. The aim of the study was to identify the effect of isometric exercise on functional ability among elderly with osteoarthritis at selected old age home at Coimbatore. Isometric exercises are effective in reducing knee pain and improving functional ability among elderly with osteoarthritis.
